In a recent report, journalist Rudy Galetti claimed that Aston Villa are set to rival Newcastle United for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez this summer. It has been mentioned that the Villans are eyeing a move to bring the English centre-back to Villa Park in this transfer window.
Gomez’s Impressive Form In English Football Last Season
Gomez had a solid campaign at the Merseyside club recently as he produced a series of impressive displays for them on the defensive end of the field. The 27-year-old was involved in 51 matches for Liverpool last season, picking up three assists in various competitions.
The London-born talent was a decent performer when defending inside his half based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from the back after completing 86.2% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Anfield will run out in the summer of 2027 which could make it tough for the Villans to snap him up on a cut-price deal this month.
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Go For Gomez?
Gomez is a good tackler of the ball and can make some crucial interceptions for his team inside his half. He usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot. The English talent can even use his strong 1.88m frame to win a few 50-50 aerial duels for his side. He is primarily a centre-back but can also serve as a right-back or play as a left-back if told to do so.
Gomez is good enough to fight for a regular first-team spot at Aston Villa this season. He would undoubtedly enhance the quality of Unai Emery’s squad and could help the Villans compete across all fronts over the next few years.
At 27, Gomez is playing in his prime which makes him a good option for the West Midlands club to consider before the end of this summer transfer window. He has also got plenty of experience in the UEFA Champions League and could be a real asset for Aston Villa this season. Therefore, Emery would be wise to go for a defender of his quality and winning mindset this month.
