In a recent report, The Times (subscription required) mentioned that Aston Villa are facing stiff competition for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. It has been claimed that the Villans would have to rival Newcastle United, Fulham, Chelsea among other clubs in pursuit of the English centre-back.
Gomez’s Impressive Form In The Premier League
Gomez enjoyed a decent campaign at the Merseyside club after he produced a series of solid displays at the heart of their backline. The 27-year-old played in 51 matches for Liverpool last season, securing three assists across multiple competitions.
The English talent was a solid presence when defending inside his half as he averaged 1.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 1.4 clearances per game in the Premier League. He was even been accurate when distributing the ball from the back based on his pass completion rate of 86.2% in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Anfield will run out in the summer of 2027 which could make it tough for the Villans to sign him on the cheap in this summer transfer window.
Aston Villa Are Facing Stiff Competition For Gomez: Is He Worth The Fight?
Gomez is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to earn the ball back for his side inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and excels at playing his way out from the back.
Standing at 1.88m, the English talent can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. He has got a wealth of experience in the Premier League and won’t take much time to adjust to life at Aston Villa.
Gomez would bring more bite and steel to Unai Emery’s defence. He has what it takes to help the Villans compete across all fronts in the coming seasons. At 27, Gomez has entered his prime which makes him a worthy target for Aston Villa to consider this summer.
However, he has previously struggled with injuries, so the West Midlands club would be taking a slight risk if they decide to move in for him in this transfer window. Still, Gomez would be well worth the fight, so Emery should try to recruit him soon.
