Liverpool’s new boss Arne Slot wants to bring in a fresh defender in this summer transfer window. According to The Sun, the manager is pushing the club to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi to strengthen the defensive unit.
Marc Guehi has caught the limelight recently
A product of Chelsea Academy, Marc Guehi joined Swansea before moving to Crystal Palace in the summer of 2021. As he got opportunities there, he managed to establish himself, courtesy of his impressive displays on the field.
Guehi featured in 29 games last season and had one assist to his name. He averaged 1 tackle, 0.6 interceptions, and 3.2 clearances per game (stats via whoscored). He was also solid for England in their recent Euro Cup 2024 campaign where they ended up as runner-up.
The English international is an aggressive-minded defender, who goes strongly on tackles and interceptions. He likes to keep his game simple and concentrate on what a defender needs to do. With accurate passing ability and high confidence, he is a force to reckon with.
Will Liverpool break the bank?
Liverpool are likely to join the race for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi this summer. While some may see him as a long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk, others might feel that he is going to fill the shoes of Joe Gomez, who is expected to depart soon.
In any way, Guehi will be a good signing for the Reds considering his qualities. As he has Premier League experience, he will take less time to adapt. The 24-year-old can serve at Anfield for many years to come.
However, Liverpool will have to spend around £75 million to acquire his services. Though Crystal Palace wants to hold the talented defender, the player is keen to move to be able to get more game-time and fight for the prestigious trophies. Newcastle United are also keeping tabs on the player.
