In a recent edition of the Here We Go podcast, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that West Ham United remain keen admirers of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo as they look to strengthen their squad this summer. Romano said,
“Interest from West Ham is still there. They signed Max Kilman for £45million, but interest in Jean-Clair Todibo remains. At the moment, it’s still too expensive for them, so it’s not easy at all.
“Keep an eye on Juventus because the manager and director also appreciate Todibo. It could be too expensive also in this case, but Juventus keep following the situation of the player. Todibo will be another big name to follow in the next few days.”
Todibo’s Impressive Form In French Football Last Season
Todibo experienced a solid campaign at the French club as he was responsible for putting in a string of impressive displays for them on the defensive third of the field. The 24-year-old picked up three assists in 33 matches for Nice last season in all competitions.
The French talent managed to prove his worth when defending inside his half based on his average of 1.9 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 3.1 clearances per game in Ligue 1 football. He has even been careful when distributing possession from the back after making 90.1% of his attempted passes in the French top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Should West Ham United Boss Julen Lopetegui Go For Todibo?
Todibo is a tough-tackling defender who can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive end of the field. The French centre-back usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive.
Standing at 1.90m Todibo can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. He can even play his way out from the back. However, there are some concerns over whether he can adapt to the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football.
Todibo would add more bite and steel to West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui’s backline. He is good enough to challenge for a regular starting spot at the London Stadium over the next few years.
At 24, Todibo has his peak years ahead of him which makes him a great choice for the Hammers to consider in this summer transfer period. Hence, Lopetegui should go for the French sensation this off-season.
