In a recent report, Sky Sports stated that West Ham United have identified Borussia Dortmund ace Niclas Fullkrug as a target. It is understood that the Hammers are eyeing a move to bring the German forward to the London Stadium this summer.
Fullkrug’s Impressive Form In German Football Last Season
Fullkrug had a decent campaign at Signal Iduna Park as he put in a lot of influential displays for Dortmund on the offensive end of the field. The 31-year-old scored 16 times and earned ten assists in 46 appearances for the German club last season across all competitions.
The veteran striker led the line well and deserves credit for averaging 1.8 shots and 1.2 key passes per game in Bundesliga football. However, he lacked quality when distributing the ball deep inside the opponent’s half based on his pass completion rate of 66.6% in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the German club will run out in the summer of 2026 which could make it difficult for the Hammers to land him on the cheap in this transfer window.
Is Fullkrug A Good Fit For West Ham United?
Fullkrug can engineer some space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has got the vision to engineer a few meaningful openings for his teammates in the final third and can be a good finisher up top.
However, the German talent has to find a way to improve his link-up play in the opposition half. Still, Fullkrug has got a wealth of experience at the highest level and could play a key role for the Hammers next season.
At 31, the Dortmund forward still has a few good seasons left in him to play at his best. We can expect him to add more firepower to West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui’s attack. He might even help the East London club compete across all fronts in the coming years.
However, only time will tell whether Fullkrug can maintain his good form in Premier League football if the Hammers manage to bring him on board this off-season. Still, Lopetegui would be wise to move in for him as he would be a decent fit for West Ham‘s offensive needs in the short-term.
