In a recent tweet, ABC TV journalist Bruno Pont claimed that West Ham United have made contact to recruit Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez. It has been stated that the Hammers are among the clubs hoping to sign the Paraguayan youngster this summer.
Gomez’s Impressive Form In Major League Soccer
Gomez is having a decent campaign in Major League Soccer after he put in a string of impressive displays for Inter Miami in the middle of the park. The 21-year-old has scored two goals and picked up two assists in 11 matches for his current employers this season across all competitions.
The Paraguayan talent has caught the eye at times at the centre of the park and deserves credit for averaging 3.0 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 1.4 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in Major League Soccer. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 81.7% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Miami-based club will expire at the end of 2026 which could make it tough for West Ham to seal a cut-price move for him in this transfer period.
Is Gomez A Good Choice For West Ham United Boss Julen Lopetegui?
Gomez is a good tackler of the ball and can make a few timely interceptions for his team inside his half. He can strike the ball with venom from long range and has got the eye to set up a few promising chances for his teammates from midfield.
The Paraguayan talent is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet. He is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also play in the number ten position if asked to do so by his manager. Gomez would undeniably enhance the quality of West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui’s match-day squad. He is good enough to compete for regular first-team football at the London Stadium in the coming years.
At 21, Gomez has the potential to be a future star in English football. Hence, he would be an excellent choice for the Hammers to consider in the long run. However, there are some concerns over whether he would be able to cope with the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League.
