In a recent report, AS offered an update on the future of Barcelona talent Sergi Roberto whose contract ended earlier this month. It is understood that the Spanish sensation is preparing to leave the Catalan club in this summer transfer period.
Roberto’s Important Role At The Nou Camp Last Season
The 32-year-old served as a good, rotational piece in Barca’s match-day squad in the previous campaign when he put in a few solid displays for them in La Liga. Roberto was involved in 24 matches for the Catalan outfit last season, finding the back of the net three times and grabbing three assists across all fronts.
The Spanish talent proved his worth at times by averaging 1.1 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 0.7 shots and 0.6 key passes per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even tidy when distributing the ball from midfield after making 90.3% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Roberto’s contract at Barcelona came to an end earlier this month. The Spaniard has shown no desire to extend his deal which could lead to his departure this summer.
Can Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick Afford To Lose Roberto?
Roberto can do a little of everything in the middle of the park. He is a good tackler of the ball and can make the odd interception for his team inside his half. The Spanish sensation can pass the ball well from midfield and is a decent playmaker in the opponent’s half. He can shoot the ball well from long range as well.
Roberto is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also serve as a defensive midfielder or as a right-back if asked to do so by his manager. He served as a valuable member of Barcelona‘s squad last season.
However, at 32, Roberto has only got a few good years left in him. Hence, it is only fair to the player if the Catalan club allow him to leave this summer in search of greener pastures. Barca head coach Hansi Flick needs to trim his squad ahead of the new campaign. With all things considered, the Catalan giants can afford to lose Roberto this off-season as long as they can find a suitable replacement for him in this transfer period.
