In a recent report, Sport offered an update on the future of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. It is understood that the Catalan club are planning to offer the Dutch midfield ace a new contract this summer.
De Jong’s Impressive Numbers In Spanish Football
De Jong had a decent campaign at the Nou Camp as he put in a string of influential displays at the heart of Barca’s midfield. The 27-year-old made 30 appearances for the Catalan giants last season, finding the back of the net twice in various competitions.
The Dutch talent was a positive influence at both ends of the pitch based on his average of 2.2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 1.1 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even been tidy when distributing possession from midfield, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 93.1% in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Catalan club will expire in the summer of 2026. Thus, it makes sense for Barca to try and tie him on a new deal this year.
What Should Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick Do With Regards With De Jong?
De Jong is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his side in the middle of the park. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when required and has got the vision to engineer some meaningful openings for his teammates in the final third.
The Dutch talent is an energetic runner with the ball and hardly gives away the ball cheaply in midfield. He is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also serve as a defensive midfielder or as a centre-back if needed.
De Jong is still an important member of Barcelona‘s match-day squad. Therefore, it makes sense for Hansi Flick to offer him a new contract so that he can keep hold of the Dutch midfielder for the long run.
At 27, De Jong has his peak years ahead of him and could help the Catalan club challenge for some major trophies over the next few years. Hence, it would be a good move for both Barca and the Dutch player to extend their time together in search of more success in the coming years.
