In a recent report, The Sun claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are locked in a three-way battle for Rennes defender Desire Doue this summer. It has been mentioned that Spurs would have to rival Chelsea and Manchester United in pursuit of the French whizkid this off-season.
Doue’s Impressive Form In French Football
The 19-year-old caught the eye at times with his performances on the offensive end of the field. Doue banged in four goals and picked up six assists in 43 matches for the French outfit last season across all fronts.
The Angers-born talent has been a decent performer in the final third based on his average of 1.1 shots, 1.0 key passes and 2.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from the wide areas after completing 79% of his attempted passes in the top tier of French football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the French club will run out in the summer of 2026. Hence, it won’t be easy for Spurs to win the race for his services on the cheap later this year.
Is Doue A Good Option For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu?
Doue is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few driving runs with the ball. He has got the vision to engineer some decisive passes on the offensive end of the field and can strike the ball with power and precision from long range.
The French talent is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also function as a right-winger or play in the number ten position if needed. However, he is still quite inexperienced at the highest level and would need time to prove his worth in Premier League football.
We can expect Doue to add more firepower to Tottenham Hotspur boss Angelos Postecoglu’s attack. He is already good enough to increase competition for places within the North London club‘s squad.
At 19, Doue has the potential to be a future star in European football. Therefore, he would be a great option for Spurs to consider in this summer transfer period. However, Postecoglu needs to be patient with his progress before he can unlock the best out of the youngster as he might need some time to adapt to the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football.
