In a recent report, ElDesmarque claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign RCD Espanyol keeper Joan Garcia this summer. It has been revealed that Spurs could face competition in the form of Real Madrid and Arsenal in the race to land the Spanish custodian.
Garcia’s Impressive Form In Spanish Football
Garcia has come through the youth ranks of Espanyol and has done well to break into their first XI recently. The 23-year-old has already made 29 senior appearances for the Spanish outfit thus far, conceding 21 goals and earning 13 clean sheets in the process on all fronts.
The Spanish custodian caught the eye at times with his performances in Spain. However, he is still quite inexperienced at the highest level and would need time to adapt to the physical style and high intensity of the Premier League if Tottenham manage to get him on board this summer.
His current contract at the Spanish club will expire in the summer of 2028 which could make it difficult for the North London club to snap him up on the cheap later this year.
Is Garcia A Good Choice For Tottenham Hotspur?
Garcia can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks when he is playing with confidence on the field. He is a solid handler of the ball and can use his reflexes to make a few important saves at the back.
However, as mentioned earlier, the Spanish talent still has a lot to learn before he can be a consistent performer in top-flight football. Still, there is no denying that he would be a great, long-term choice for Tottenham to pursue in this summer transfer period.
We can expect Garcia to bring more quality to Spurs boss Angelos Postecoglu’s goalkeeping department. At 23, the Spaniard has got the potential to be a world-class keeper in the future as long as he continues to develop with each year.
Garcia has his peak years ahead of him which makes him a decent fit for the North London club‘s needs in the long run. However, Postecoglu would have to be patient with his progress before he can unlock the best out of the Spanish keeper.
