In a recent report, Area Napoli stated that Tottenham Hotspur are in the mix to sign Mario Hermoso this summer. It is believed that Spurs are facing competition from Aston Villa, Chelsea and other clubs from Saudi Arabia in the race to land the experienced centre-half in this transfer period.
Hermoso’s Impressive Run Of Form In Spanish Football
Hermoso had a solid campaign at Atletico Madrid recently as he managed to produce a string of impressive displays for them on the defensive third of the field. The 29-year-old scored two times and picked up a couple of assists in 45 matches for the Madrid outfit last season in all competitions.
The Spanish talent has been a dominant presence when defending inside his half based on his average of 1.5 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 2.6 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even been tidy when distributing possession from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 87.1% in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
Hermoso is currently a free agent after his contract with Atletico Madrid ran out earlier this summer which means that Tottenham could potentially sign him on a free transfer this off-season.
Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu Move In For Hermoso?
Hermoso is a tough-tackling defender who can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his team on the defensive third of the pitch. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive.
The Spanish talent is a tidy passer of the ball as well and has got a wealth of experience at the highest level. He is primarily a centre-back but can also serve as a left-back if told to do so.
We can expect Hermoso to add more bite and steel to Tottenham head coach Angelos Postecoglu’s backline. He is good enough to nail down a regular first-team place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season.
At 29, Hermoso is playing in his prime and is currently available on a free transfer. Thus, it makes sense for Spurs to move in for him before the start of the new campaign. However, it remains to be seen whether the Spaniard can make a smooth transition to life in North London.
