In a recent print edition, O Jogo (6 July, Page 18) stated that Benfica midfielder Florentio Luis could be open to joining Everton this summer. However, it is understood that the Toffees would face competition in the form of Fulham and Leicester City in pursuit of the Portuguese talent this off-season.
Luis’ Impressive Form In Portuguese Football
Luis anchored the midfield with conviction for Benfica in the previous campaign when he put in a series of solid displays for them at the centre of the park. The Portuguese talent played in 45 matches for the Portuguese club last season in various competitions.
The 24-year-old gave a good account of himself in the middle of the park as he averaged 2.6 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game in Liga Portugal. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 89% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Portuguese club will run out in the summer of 2027. Hence, Everton would struggle to get a deal done for him on the cheap in this transfer period.
Should Everton Boss Sean Dyche Move In For Florentino Luis?
Luis is a tough-tackling midfielder who can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team at the centre of the park. He can offer decent protection for his teammates at the back when he is playing well on the field.
However, the Portuguese midfield ace has to find a way to be more consistent in top-flight football. Plus, he might struggle to adapt to the physical style and high intensity of the Premier League if Everton manage to snap him up this summer.
We can expect to bring more quality and depth to Sean Dyche’s midfield department. He has what it takes to compete for a regular first-team spot at the Merseyside club in the coming seasons.
At 24, Luis has his peak years ahead of him which makes him a decent option for the Toffees to pursue this summer. Hence, Dyche would be wise to move in for him before the end of this summer transfer period.
