In a recent report, the Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) claimed that Newcastle United could join the race to land Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno this summer. It has been stated that the Magpies could rival Napoli in pursuit of the Italian defensive ace this summer.
Buongiorno’s Impressive Form In Serie A
Buongiorno had a great campaign at the Italian club after he put in a series of solid performances at the heart of their backline. The 25-year-old scored three goals and secured one assist in 31 appearances for Torino last season in all competitions.
The Torino-born talent was a decent contributor on the defensive end of the field as he averaged 2.4 tackles, 2.4 interceptions and 4.5 clearances per game in Serie A. He was even careful with his ball distribution from the back based on his pass completion rate of 85.4% in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Torino will run out in the summer of 2028 which could make it difficult for Newcastle to snap him up on the cheap later this year.
Is Buongiorno A Good Option For Newcastle United?
Buongiorno is a good tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and excels at playing his way out from the back.
The Italy international can use his strong 1.90m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. However, he has still not proven his worth outside Italian football. We can expect Buongiorno to bring more bite and steel to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe’s frontline.
At 25, Buongiorno has his best years ahead of him which makes him a great option for the Magpies to consider in the summer transfer period. He is good enough to help the Tyneside club compete across all fronts in the future.
However, only time will tell whether Buongiorno can cope with the physical style and high intensity of Premier League football. Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting a player of Buongiorno’s defensive prowess. Thus, Newcastle would be wise to try everything they can to lure him to St. James’ Park before the end of this summer transfer period.
