In a recent edition of the Ranks FC Ultras Podcast, journalist Dean Jones stated that Newcastle United are prepared to move in Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer. Jones said,
“It’s true. Newcastle are prepared and they could come back in for Calvert-Lewin. They just want him at a better price and they felt Everton were asking for too much last time around. They feel that Calvert-Lewin could leave this summer and if he does leave he’s best positioned to join Newcastle,”
Calvert-Lewin’s Impressive Form In The Premier League
Calvert-Lewin struggled to prove his worth as a consistent performer at Goodison Park as he failed to help the Toffees steer clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone. The 27-year-old scored eight goals and grabbed three assists in 38 matches for Everton last season in multiple competitions.
The Sheffield-born talent led the line well at times for the Merseyside club based on his average of 2.3 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He struggled to be tidy with his link-up play in the final third as he completed just 56.9% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Everton will expire at the end of next season which could give the Magpies a chance to sign the experienced forward this off-season.
Is Calvert-Lewin A Good Fit For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Calvert-Lewin can use his strong frame to engineer some space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to create the odd chance for his teammates on the offensive end of the field. However, the English talent has to find a way to improve his link-up play up top.
We can expect Calvert-Lewin to bring more firepower to Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe’s frontline. He has what it takes to compete for a regular starting spot at the Tyneside club next season.
At 27, Calvert-Lewin is about to enter his prime which makes him a good fit for Newcastle‘s needs in the short-term. However, the English sensation won’t be a solution to Howe’s offensive concerns in the future as he is far from a prolific centre-forward.
