In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey stated that Newcastle United are in talks to land Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo. It has been claimed that the Magpies are eager to sign the French centre-back as they look to bolster their defence this summer.
Todibo’s Impressive Form In Ligue 1 Last Season
Todibo had a solid campaign at the French club recently and managed to put in a handful of dominant performances for them on the defensive third of the pitch. The 24-year-old made 33 appearances for Nice last season, securing three assists in multiple competitions.
The French talent was a dominant presence when defending inside his half as he averaged 1.9 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 3.1 clearances per game in Ligue 1. He was even tidy when distributing possession from the back after making 90.1% of his attempted passes in the French first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the French club will run out in the summer of 2027. Hence, the Magpies would have to make a big offer if they are serious about landing Todibo later this year.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Snap Todibo Up This Summer?
Todibo is a decent tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when required and can use his strong 1.90m frame to win a few 50-50 duels for his team in the air. The French sensation is also proficient at playing his way out from the back. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in England.
Todibo would undeniably add more bite and steel to Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe’s defence. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the Tyneside club next season.
At 24, Todibo would only grow as a footballer over the next few years. Therefore, he would be an excellent choice for the Magpies to consider in this summer transfer period. Todibo might even help Newcastle compete on all fronts in the future. Thus, Howe would be wise to try everything in his power to snap the French defensive ace up before the start of the new campaign.
