Manchester United have identified Benfica defender Antonio Silva as a viable target for the summer transfer window, according to Portuguese publication O Jogo. The former side believe the addition of the player will improve their defensive unit enormously.
The rising reputation of Antonio Silva
Antonio Silva came through the ranks of Benfica Academy and has emerged as a top talent in the world of football. He made his senior team debut in the 2022-23 season. In a short time, he has become an integral part of the side.
Silva was a regular pick this season, where he turned up 50 times for his team. He also found the back of the net twice in those many games. He averaged 2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, and 3.4 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Portuguese is a tough defender to pass due to his insane physical strength, long reach, and speed. He doesn’t shy away from tackling and also clears the ball if needed. He is comfortable with the ball at his feet, allowing him to build attacks from the back.
Manchester United need a centre-back
Manchester United suffered badly last season in the defensive section because of poor displays and multiple injuries. They conceded 58 goals in the league itself, which sums up the situation pretty well. Hence, solidifying the backline should be their top priority.
With the departure of Raphael Varane, the Red Devils need someone who can keep things tight at the backline and help the team. Though Antonio Silva isn’t an ideal replacement, he could be a great addition to the already-established squad.
The 20-year-old has shown that he has all the qualities required to succeed in the Premier League. He can serve the club for many years should he continue to elevate his game under proper guidance and more game time. However, Benfica reportedly want the interested buyer to trigger the player’s €100 million release clause.
