According to The Mirror, Manchester United are planning to sign a new left-back in the summer transfer window. However, it won’t be any fancy name as the club cannot invest a high sum. Hence, the Premier League club have identified Marcos Alonso as a viable target.
Marcos Alonso has left Barcelona
Marcos Alonso is a veteran and quite popular in world football. He has represented the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Barcelona. His last spell was at Camp Nou, where he played for two years and helped the team get back on track.
However, as Alonso didn’t get enough game-time last season and has left as a free agent. He managed to feature for only 392 minutes across eight games in the 2023-24 season. He averaged 0.8 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, and 1.1 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The Spanish left-back is skilful on the ball as he can create goal-scoring opportunities going forward on the pitch. He likes to put crosses, give key passes, or can also provide finishing touches. He also makes good defensive contributions with tackles and interceptions.
A good backup for Manchester United
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag wants to sign a new left-back to secure the position better. Last season, they struggled in that area due to multiple injuries and a lack of form. They even had to deploy Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot to cover the position.
As Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw continue to remain fit, a recruitment would make sense. Hence, the Red Devils have made a list of three names, one of which is Marcos Alonso. As Alonso has prior Premier League experience, he can make an instant impact.
The 33-year-old’s arrival will add depth and value to the unit. He should also be ready to take up a backup role, meaning he will get limited game time. Moreover, getting a player of his quality for free shouldn’t be a bad deal at all.
