As reported by The Athletic, Manchester United are planning to sign another striker after marching close to signing Joshua Zirkzee. As stated in the report, the club are discussing a move for Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin is important to Everton
A product of Sheffield United, Dominic Calvert-Lewin arrived at Everton in the summer of 2016. Initially, he had to wait to get opportunities to prove himself. But as the chances came, he utilized them with both his hands and managed to cement his spot.
Talking about his game style, Calvert-Lewin is a smart striker who positions himself between the defenders. He makes good runs to exploit the spaces and is also remarkably strong at winning aerial duels. However, sometimes he lacks link-up plays.
Despite missing some games due to fitness issues, the English forward managed to feature in 38 games this season. He netted eight goals and provided three assists. He averaged 2.3 shots, 0.7 key passes, and 0.5 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
Why does Manchester United want Dominic Calvert-Lewin?
Manchester United have Rasmus Hojlund at their disposal but he cannot be relied upon. The Danish striker surely needs more time to develop his game and find consistency in his performances. Hence, the club are planning to sign a new striker in the summer.
The Red Devils are close to acquiring Joshua Zirkzee but they might not stop there. The management is considering signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to complete the unit. It’s understandable as they lack experience in that position.
Hence, the arrival of the 27-year-old will add the much-needed experience. Moreover, he can step up if others fail to find form or fitness. The cost of the deal could be around £30 million, which shouldn’t be an issue for Manchester United. Even Everton might be tempted to cash in on the veteran as he is in the final year of his contract.
