In a recent report, le10Sport revealed that Manchester City have launched a concrete move for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte. It has been mentioned that the Mancunian giants would have to rival Manchester United and Barcelona in the race to land the Uruguay international this summer.
Ugarte’s Impressive Form In Ligue 1
Ugarte managed to put in a run of solid performances at the heart of PSG’s midfield in the previous campaign. The 23-year-old made 37 appearances for the French outfit last season, picking up three assists in the process across various competitions.
The Uruguayan talent failed to find the back of the net for PSG but offered decent protection for his teammates at the back. Ugarte deserves some credit for averaging 3.9 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 1.0 clearances per game in Ligue 1. He has even been excellent with his ball distribution based on his pass success rate of 91.5% in the French top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the French club will run out in the summer of 2028. Thus, Man City would have to make a convincing offer if they want to win the race for his services.
Should Manchester City Boss Pep Guardiola Get Ugarte On Board?
Ugarte is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually clears the danger when needed and is a tidy passer of the ball as well.
The South American sensation can even make some driving runs with the ball from midfield when he is playing well on the field. However, he might struggle to cope with the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if Man City manage to snap him up this off-season.
At 23, Ugarte will only get better with each season. He is good enough to offer some healthy competition for Rodri at the Mancunian club. We can expect him to bring more bite and steel to Man City‘s midfield department.
Hence, Guardiola would be wise to try everything in his power to get Ugarte on board in this summer transfer window. He could even help Man City challenge for a lot of major trophies over the next decade.
