According to Football Insider, Athletic Club attacker Nico Williams is on the radar of Liverpool for the summer transfer window. The Premier League club is willing to go after him if they fail to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.
Nico Williams is effective in the final third
Nico Williams is an Athletic Club Academy product and is considered one of the best attackers across Europe at present. He made his senior team debut in 2020 and has taken huge strides since then. He is already an integral part of the Spanish side.
Williams plays on the left wing but can switch positions whenever required. He is known for his creativity in the final third. Blessed with pace, dribbling ability, and clinical finishing, he is a top-quality attacker. The player also links up well with his teammates.
The Spanish international contributed eight goals and 19 assists in 37 games this season. He averaged 1.8 shots, 1.6 key passes, and 2.8 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored). The numbers are expected to improve further in upcoming times.
Why does Liverpool want Nico Williams?
Liverpool need to sign new attackers if they wish to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal. They have been heavily linked with Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon. But the Magpies aren’t willing to let the winger leave for a reasonable price.
Hence, the Reds have turned their focus towards Nico Williams, who has a release clause of €58 million. The price shouldn’t be an issue for the English outfit. Though Barcelona are also interested in the player they aren’t financially sound at the moment.
Williams could actually be a good addition to Liverpool’s offensive line as the player is extremely talented. His creativity in the final third will help add more goals. The players has also been performing well at the ongoing Euro Cup, meaning he could be a good long-term investment.
The Reds are also keeping tabs on PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko, who should be an even cheaper option than the 22-year-old.
