In a recent print edition, The Sun (14 July, Page 59) stated that Everton have set their sights on Blackburn Rovers ace Sammie Szmodics this summer. It has been mentioned that the Toffees are eyeing a move to bring the Irish attacker to Goodison Park later this year.
Szmodics’ Impressive Run Of Form In The EFL Championship
The 28-year-old put in a series of impressive displays for Blackburn Rovers on the offensive end of the field. Szmodics made 48 appearances for the English outfit last season, scoring 33 times and picking up four assists in the process across multiple competitions.
The Colchester-born talent has been a reliable performer in the final third based on his average of 3.3 shots, 1.1 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the EFL Championship. He was even been tidy when distributing possession in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 80.7% in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the English club will run out in the summer of 2026, so Everton would have to make a sizable offer if they are serious about recruiting Szmodics this off-season.
Should Everton Move In For Szmodics This Summer?
Szmodics is proficient at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He can shoot the ball with venom from long range and has got the eye to play a few decisive passes in the final third.
The Irish sensation can make a few driving runs with the ball in and around the opponent’s penalty area. He is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also play as a striker or as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so by his manager.
We can expect Szmodics to add more firepower to Everton head coach Sean Dyche’s attack. He has what it takes to compete for a regular playing role in the Merseyside club‘s first-team.
At 28, Szmodics is playing in his prime and could make an instant impact at Goodison Park if he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League. He might even help Everton steer clear of the relegation danger next season.
