Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed that Everton could still land Leeds United speedster Wilfried Gnonto this summer. It has been stated that the Toffees are eager to bring the Italian wide player to Merseyside before the end of this transfer window.
Gnonto’s Impressive Season At Leeds United
Gnonto experienced a decent campaign at Elland Road recently as he managed to produce a run of influential displays for Leeds in the final third. The Italian talent was involved in 44 matches for the Yorkshire outfit last season, scoring nine goals and securing three assists in all competitions.
The 20-year-old caught the eye at times on the right flank and did well to average 1.3 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per game in the EFL Championship. He even distributed possession accurately in the opponent’s half after completing 83.6% of his attempted passes in the second tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Leeds will run out in the summer of 2027. Thus, Everton would have to make a convincing offer if they want to recruit Gnonto this off-season.
What Will Gnonto Bring To Everton?
Gnonto has got the pace to cause some problems for his marker out in the wide areas. He can shoot the ball with power from long range and has got the eye to set up some decent chances for others around him on the offensive end of the field.
The Italian sensation usually operates as a right-winger but can also fill in as a left-sided wide player or play as a striker down the middle if required. We can expect him to bring more pace and firepower to Everton boss Sean Dyche’s attack. However, it remains to be seen whether Gnonto can maintain his good form in the Premier League if the Toffees manage to get him on board this summer.
At 20, Gnonto has the potential to be a future star in English football. Therefore, the Merseyside club would do well to snap him up in this transfer window. He is good enough to fight for regular first-team football at Goodison Park and could help Everton compete across all fronts in the coming years.
