According to a report by French outlet L’Equipe, Chelsea have submitted an enquiry for Lens striker Elye Wahi to sign him in the summer. The Premier League club wanted to sign him last summer but failed to materialize a deal.
Who is Elye Wahi?
After impressing at Montpellier, Elye Wahi signed for Lens last summer for a deal amounting to €35 million. However, his performances haven’t been as good as everyone expected. He was a bit inconsistent in the final third and should improve further.
Despite his below-par displays, Wahi managed to produce 12 goals and four assists in 37 games. He averaged 2.1 shots, 0.6 key passes, and 0.6 dribbles per game (stats via whoscored).
The Frenchman is an electrifying attacker who is very tough to defend. He is always a threat on the counter-attacks. However, he needs to improve his link-up plays and aerial presence. Once he improves in these areas, he will be a world-class striker.
Should Elye Wahi be Chelsea’s new striker?
As we told you earlier, Chelsea’s interest in Elye Wahi is not new. They tried signing him last summer but failed to do so and as they need to sign a fresh striker ahead of next season, they are back in the hunt.
The need for a new striker arose after Nicolas Jackson failed to impress at Stamford Bridge. Though he is a quality player and managed to produce decent numbers, one can’t ignore the amount of big chances he missed in front of the goal.
Hence, the Blues are looking to strengthen their position to fight for trophies next season. They were interested in some big names but it will be difficult for the club to finance them in this window. Hence, a cheaper option would be more ideal.
Elye Wahi is a player who can do an excellent job for Chelsea he is excellent with his finishes. Though he lacks the ability to hold the ball, he can improve. With more experience and guidance, he can emerge as a top choice for the club.
