According to The Athletic, Chelsea are impressed with the progress of American prodigy Caleb Wiley at Atlanta United. The Premier League are even considering a move to sign the talented kid in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Who is Caleb Wiley?
Caleb Wiley joined Atlanta Academy at the age of 11 and worked hard to climb up the ladders. His consistent performances helped him break into the senior time for the first time in 2022. Since then, he has become an integral part of the side.
Wiley is a regular name on the team sheet as he has featured in 20 games this season so far. He scored a goal and provided two assists in the process. He averaged 1.5 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, and 2.3 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
The American plays on the left wing and is equally good at both attacking and defending aspects of the game. He is fast and accurate with his tackles to stop threats. He also likes to go higher on the pitch to create chances for his teammates.
Will Chelsea invest in Caleb Wiley?
Chelsea have already parted ways with Ian Maatsen and the future of Marc Cucurella is uncertain at Stamford Bridge. Hence, the club are considering signing a new left-back to secure the position better before the next season kicks in.
Though Wiley will not be a starter for the Blues, he can be utilised as a backup. He will also get to learn from Ben Chilwell and might even feature if the latter continues to face fitness issues. The 19-year-old is still in the developing phase of his career.
But considering the potential he has, it won’t be a bad idea to place a long-term bet on the youngster. It will depend upon what the Blues conclude in the coming weeks. The pursuit of the left-back shouldn’t cost too much to the English outfit.
