If a report from the French outlet L’Equipe is believed to be true, Celtic have shortlisted Yvon Mvogo as one of the summer targets. They are weighing up options to replace Joe Hart following his retirement from the game, and the Swiss custodian is now on their radar alongside Asmir Begovic and Peter Vindahl Jensen.
The 30-year-old Switzerland international progressed through the academy ranks of Young Boys before securing a senior status in 2013. However, a €5m transfer to RB Leipzig did not work out for the shot-stopper. He found himself as the understudy to Peter Gulacsi and eventually joined PSV on a two-year loan in search of first-team minutes. After Germany and the Netherlands, Mvogo plied his trades to France to join Lorient.
Despite being contracted until the summer of 2025, Lorient’s relegation from Ligue 1 should allow him to seek a fresh opportunity elsewhere. He was in the national camp for the ongoing EURO 2024, but the Rossocrociati’s exit from the quarterfinals could accelerate talks in the next few days.
Why Celtic Must Not Give Up The Chase
Meanwhile, the Hoops are not alone in the hunt with Nice and Parma also weighing up a move in an attempt to bolster themselves in goal. Sparta Prague goalkeeper Peter Vindahl Jensen remains the preferred choice as per The Scottish Sun. But the gaffer Brendan Rodgers might opt for the Swiss veteran in case he misses out on the big Dane who only made his Sparta move permanent four months back.
Although the Hoops are linked with Begovic who rejected a new contract with Queens Park Rangers, the 37-year-old Bosnian would not fit in Rodgers’ long-term project at Celtic Park. He could be a short fix if the Celts fail to grab the other targets, yet the manager must find a worthy successor for Hart to restore stability between the sticks.
While the focus remains on selling the fringe and retaining key players, the Glasgow giants are yet to make a summer signing despite multiple rumours. They are also keen to bring Adam Idah back on a permanent deal, but a fee with Norwich City has not been agreed yet. The Northern Irish boss has ample depth across the pitch and he now demands quality over quantity to re-establish Celtic as a competitive European force after years of humiliation.
Nevertheless, the Bhoys are not blessed to spend millions in the market and their scouting team has often identified low-key names who emerged as enormous success. Mvogo could become one such recruit irrespective of a disappointing 2023-24 campaign.
