In a recent report, Gerard Romero of Jijantes mentioned that Barcelona are set to step up their efforts to land Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. It has been revealed that Barca president Joan Laporta has asked Deco to go all out to recruit the Spain international this summer.
Williams’ Impressive Run Of Form In Spanish Football
Williams had a promising campaign in La Liga recently as he managed to prove himself to be a reliable performer for Athletic Bilbao in the final third. The 22-year-old deserves a ton of credit for scoring eight goals and securing 19 assists in 37 matches for the Spanish club last season in multiple competitions.
The Pamplona-born talent has been a decent contributor in the opponent’s half based on his average of 1.8 shots, 1.5 key passes and 2.8 dribbles per game in La Liga. He has even distributed the ball relatively well, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 79.2% in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Spanish club will run out in the summer of 2027 which could make it tough for Barca to get a deal done for him on the cheap later this year.
What Will Williams Bring To Barcelona?
Williams is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few driving runs with the ball in the final third. He has got the vision to engineer a few meaningful chances for his teammates in the final third and can shoot the ball with venom from long range.
The Spanish talent helped his nation win the UEFA Euro 2024 earlier this month which could raise his stock even more this summer. He is primarily a left-winger but can also operate as a right-sided wide player if told to do so.
Williams would bring more quality and depth to Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick’s attack. At 22, the Spanish talent has the potential to be a world-class player in his position someday.
Thus, it makes sense for the Catalan club to try and bring him to the Nou Camp before the end of this summer transfer window. Williams already knows La Liga well and could help Barca challenge for some major silverware over the next decade.
