In a recent report, Sport claimed that Barcelona boss Hansi Flick is a big admirer of Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams this summer. It has been mentioned that the Catalan club are weighing up a move for the Spanish talent this off-season.
Williams’ Impressive Form In Spanish Football
Williams enjoyed a decent campaign at the Spanish club after he put in a series of productive performances for them in the final third. The 21-year-old banged in eight goals and earned 19 assists in 39 matches for Athletic Bilbao last season across all fronts.
The Spanish talent has been a consistent performer out on the flanks as he averaged 1.8 shots, 1.5 key passes, 1.5 crosses and 2.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half based on his pass completion rate of 79.2% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Wanda Metropolitano will run out in the summer of 2027 which would make it difficult for the Catalan club to sign him on the cheap later this year.
What Will Williams Bring To The Nou Camp?
Williams is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few dangerous runs with the ball out in the wide areas. He has got the vision to engineer a few promising chances for his teammates in the final third.
The Spanish sensation can strike the ball with power from long range and can chip in by scoring and creating a lot of important goals for his team. He is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also operate as a right-winger or as a centre-forward if asked to do so.
We can expect him to bring more pace and firepower to Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick’s attack. He is more than capable of earning a regular starting spot at the Nou Camp in the coming seasons.
At 21, the Pamplona-born talent has the potential to be a future star in Spanish football as long as he continues to mature as a footballer with each year. He has what it takes to help the Catalan giants challenge across all competitions in the future.
