In a recent report, The Daily Star stated that Barcelona are working on another loan deal for Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo. It has been claimed that the Catalan club are willing to pay a £7m loan fee, with the obligation to buy the Portuguese defender permanently for £18m next summer.
Cancelo’s Impressive Loan Spell In Spanish Football
Cancelo had a decent loan spell at the Nou Camp in the previous campaign after he put in a run of eye-catching displays for them as a full-back. The 30-year-old registered four goals and five assists in 42 matches for Barca last season in various competitions.
The Portugal international was a positive influence at both ends of the field as he averaged 2.0 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 1.3 clearances, 1.0 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even excellent when distributing the ball from the wide areas, based on his pass success rate of 84.6% in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
Cancelo’s current deal at Man City will run out in the summer of 2027. Thus, Barcelona have got no choice but to launch a big move if they want to bring him back to the Nou Camp this off-season.
Barcelona Are Working On Another Loan Deal For Cancelo: Good Move For Everyone Involved?
Cancelo loves a tackle and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive third of the pitch. He usually clears the danger when needed but can sometimes be caught out of position when defending inside his half.
The Portuguese sensation can strike the ball purely from long range and has got the eye to play a few decisive passes from the wide areas. He is a decent dribbler with the ball as well and has got a wealth of experience at the highest level.
Cancelo is good enough to nail down a regular starting place at the Catalan club once again next season. He would undeniably enhance the quality of Barcelona boss Hansi Flick’s squad this summer.
At 30, Cancelo has still got a few good years left in him to play at his best. Hence, signing him on loan would be a good move for both the player as well as the Catalan club as they try to bring more success back to the Nou Camp.
