In a recent report, Mundo Deportivo claimed that Barcelona are big admirers of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana this summer. It has been mentioned that the Catalan club are eyeing a move for the Belgian talent this off-season.
Onana’s Impressive Form At Goodison Park
Onana had a decent campaign at the Merseyside club after he put in a series of impressive displays at the centre of their midfield. The 22-year-old participated in 37 matches for Everton last season, scoring three goals and grabbing one assist across all competitions.
The Belgian talent caught the eye at times at both ends of the field based on his average of 2.4 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 1.0 shots and 0.6 key passes per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from midfield, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 84.9% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Onana is under contract at the Merseyside club until the summer of 2027 which could make it difficult for the Catalan club to snap him up on the cheap later this year.
What Will Onana Bring To Barcelona?
Onana is a tough-tackling midfielder who can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his team at the centre of the park. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive and can strike the ball with power from long range.
The Belgian talent has got the vision to engineer a few decent chances for his teammates in the final third. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also function as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so by his manager.
Onana would bring more bite and steel to Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick’s midfield. He is more than capable of earning a regular starting spot at the Nou Camp next season. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in Spain.
At 22, Onana has the potential to be a future star in European football as long as he continues to improve with each season. Therefore, Flick should focus on getting a deal done for the Belgian sensation before the end of this summer transfer window.
