Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke mentioned that Aston Villa remain keen on recruiting Chelsea playmaker Conor Gallagher this summer. It has been stated that the Villans are eager to get a deal done for the English midfielder this off-season.
Gallagher’s Impressive Season In Premier League Football
Gallagher enjoyed a good campaign at the West London club after he produced a string of impressive displays at the centre of the park. The 24-year-old scored seven times and picked up nine assists in 50 matches for Chelsea last season on all fronts.
The Epsom-born talent was a positive influence at both ends of the field as he averaged 2.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 1.3 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He was even tidy when distributing the ball from midfield based on his pass completion rate of 91.5% in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Stamford Bridge will run out at the end of next season which could open the door for the Villans to recruit him on the cheap later this summer.
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Go For Gallagher?
Gallagher is a solid tackler of the ball and can make the odd interception for his team at the centre of the park. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when needed and can strike the ball with power and precision from long range.
The English talent has even got the eye to play a few decisive passes for his team in the final third. He is a good dribbler with the ball as well and can contribute by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from midfield.
Gallagher is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also operate in the number ten position or act as a defensive midfielder if asked to do so by his manager. We can expect him to bring more quality to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s midfield department.
Gallagher already knows the Premier League well and won’t take much time to settle into life at the West Midlands club. All in all, Emery would be wise to go for the English playmaker before the end of this transfer window.
