In a recent report on his Substack, Simon Phillips mentioned that Aston Villa are keeping a keen eye on Brentford forward Ivan Toney. It has been stated that the Villans are eyeing a move to bring the English striker to the West Midlands club this summer.
Toney’s Decent Run of Form In English Football
Toney put in a few impressive displays as the focal point of Brentford’s attack last season. The English forward managed to find the back of the net four times and earn two assists in 17 matches for the Bees in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The 28-year-old managed to impress at times with his performances in the final third based on his average of 3.0 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, he was sloppy with his ball distribution after completing 55.7% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the English club will expire at the end of next season. Therefore, the Magpies would have to make a convincing offer if they want to bring him to St. James’ Park this summer.
Is Toney A Good Fit For Aston Villa?
Toney excels at finding space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to play a few decisive passes on the offensive end of the field. He is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet but needs to find a way to improve his ball distribution up top.
We can expect Toney to add more goals to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s frontline. He has what it takes to fight for a regular starting spot at Villa Park in the future. At 28, Toney is about to enter his prime which makes him a worthy target for the Villans to consider in the summer.
At 28, Toney is playing in his prime which makes him a good fit for the West Midlands club‘s needs this summer. He would help Aston Villa challenge for some major trophies over the next few years. Therefore, Emery should focus on getting a deal done for him before the end of this transfer window.
