In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey stated that Arsenal remain keen admirers of Real Sociedad midfielder, Mikel Merino this summer. It is believed that the Gunners are still trying to get a deal done for the Spain international in this transfer period.
Merino’s Decent Run Of Form In La Liga Last Season
The 28-year-old experienced a good campaign at Real Sociedad as he produced a series of eye-catching displays for them at the centre of the park. Merino netted eight goals and secured five assists in 45 appearances for his current club last season across all fronts.
The Spain international proved himself to be a valuable presence at both ends of the field based on his average of 2.4 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 1.7 clearances, 0.9 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even tidy when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 77.5% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Merino’s current contract at the Spanish club will expire next summer, so the Gunners could recruit him on a cut-price deal in this transfer window.
What Will Merino Bring To Arsenal?
Merino loves a tackle and can make some crucial interceptions for his side at the centre of the park. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and can strike the ball with venom from long range.
The Spaniard is an energetic runner with the ball and can create the odd chance for his teammates up top. However, there are some concerns over whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League if the Gunners manage to bring him to North London this summer.
Merino did well to help his country win the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament which was held in Germany earlier this summer. He has got the experience and winning mindset to be a real asset in Mikel Arteta‘s match-day squad in this upcoming campaign.
We can expect Merino to bring more quality and depth to Arsenal‘s midfield department. Plus, he might even help the North London giants compete for some major honours in the future. At 28, Merino is playing in his prime which makes him a worthy target for the Gunners to pursue this off-season.
