In a recent tweet, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano stated that Arsenal are ready to step up their efforts to land Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino this summer. It has been claimed that the Gunners have identified the Spain international as a target for this transfer period.
Merino’s Impressive Form In La Liga
Merino enjoyed a decent campaign at the Spanish club after he put in a string of impressive performances at the heart of their midfield. The 28-year-old scored eight goals and earned five assists in 45 matches for his current club last season on all fronts.
The Spanish talent was a positive influence at both ends of the pitch as he averaged 2.4 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 1.7 clearances, 0.9 shots, 0.6 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per game in La Liga football. He was even accurate when distributing possession from midfield based on his pass completion rate of 77.5% in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Real Sociedad will expire at the end of next season which could give Arsenal a chance to sign him on the cheap in this summer transfer period.
Is Merino A Good Option For Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta?
Merino is a solid tackler of the ball and can make the odd interception for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing his lines when the opposition are on the offensive and can strike the ball with venom from long range.
The Spaniard can set up some decent plays for others around him in the final third and is a good dribbler as well. He is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also operate as a defensive midfielder if told to do so.
We can expect Merino to bring more quality and depth to Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta‘s midfield department. He has what it takes to help the Gunners compete across all competitions over the next few years.
At 28, Merino is playing in his prime which makes him a worthy target for the North London club to pursue this off-season. However, he might need some time to get used to the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football. Still, there is no denying that Merino would be a great option for the Gunners to consider in this transfer window.
