In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey mentioned that Arsenal are among the clubs hoping to land Real Madrid keeper Andriy Lunin. It has been stated that the Gunners would have to rival Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the race to sign the Ukrainian goalie.
Lunin’s Impressive Campaign At The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium
Lunin experienced a solid campaign at the Madrid club as he put in a string of impressive displays for them in La Liga. The Ukraine international made 31 appearances for Los Blancos last season, conceding 32 goals and securing 12 clean sheets across all fronts.
The 25-year-old did well to average 1.4 clearances and 3.2 long balls per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even excellent with his ball distribution after making 85.2% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the North London club will expire at the end of next season which could make it easy for the Gunners to sign him on a cut-price deal later this year.
Should Arsenal Head Coach Mikel Arteta Go For Lunin?
Lunin can use his quick reflexes to make a few solid saves at the back and is a solid handler of the ball. He excels at playing his way out from the back and has got some experience of playing at the highest level.
Standing at 1.91m, Lunin is a towering presence inside his penalty box but needs to earn regular first-team starts in the coming seasons if he wants to improve as a footballer. Hence, Arsenal would be a good fit for him as he is more than capable of challenging David Raya for a regular starting spot at the Emirates Stadium next season.
At 25, Luin has his peak years ahead of him which makes him a worthy target for the Gunners to consider in this summer transfer period. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in North London.
Still, there is no denying that Lunin has the skillset and winning mindset to help Arsenal compete for some major honours in the not-too-distant future. Therefore, Mikel Arteta should consider going all out to sign the Ukraine international before the end of this summer transfer period.
