In a recent tweet, journalist Dharmesh Seth claimed that West Ham United are set to sign Wes Foderingham on a free transfer this summer. It has been revealed that the Hammers have agreed terms with the English goalie over a two-year deal.
Foderingham’s Difficult Campaign At Bramall Lane
Foderingham endured a tough campaign at Sheffield United recently as he struggled to keep things solid at the back for them in the Premier League. The English talent played in 31 matches for the Blades last season, conceding 79 goals and earning two clean sheets in multiple competitions.
The 33-year-old deserves some credit for averaging 1.0 clearances and 7.6 long balls per game in Premier League football. However, he was woeful when distributing possession from the back after completing 52.6% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
Foderingham is set to become a free agent at the end of this month when his contract expires at Sheffield United. Thus, West Ham would do well to recruit him on a free transfer this summer.
Will Foderingham Be A Good Signing For Arsenal?
Foderingham is a good handler of the ball and can use his quick reflexes to make some solid saves at the back. He usually puts his foot through the ball when at risk of being caught out inside his half. However, the English custodian has to find a way to improve his ball distribution if he wants to enjoy a successful spell at West Ham.
Foderingham has got a wealth of experience at the highest level and could still serve as a good squad player in Premier League football. Therefore, he would be a good signing for the Hammers in the short term.
The London-born talent has what it takes to serve as a good, rotational piece in Julen Lopetegui’s squad next season. He would be a solid back-up option to Alphonse Areola at the London Stadium over the next couple of years.
With all things considered, West Ham would do well to sign Foderingham on a free transfer this off-season. However, he is nowhere near good enough to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the East London club at this stage of his career.
