In a recent report, La Repubblica (via La Lazio Siamo Noi) mentioned that West Ham United are set to rival Aston Villa for Juventus left-back Luca Pellegrini, who played last season on loan at Lazio, this summer. It has been claimed that the Hammers are showing interest in the Italian left-back.
Pellegrini’s Impressive Form In Serie A
Pellegrini enjoyed a solid loan spell at the Italian club recently as he put in a series of impressive displays for them on the left flank. The 25-year-old netted one goal and picked up one assist in 26 matches for Lazio last season in multiple competitions.
The Roma-born talent made most of his appearances off the bench but did well to average 0.9 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 0.8 clearances and 0.7 dribbles per game in Serie A. He was even tidy when distributing the ball from the left flank based on his pass success rate of 76.6% in the Italian top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at his parent club Juventus will run out in the summer of 2026. Thus, it won’t be easy for West Ham to win the race for his services in this transfer window.
Is Pellegrini A Decent Choice For West Ham United Boss Julen Lopetegui?
Pellegrini is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team on the defensive third of the pitch. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when needed and can make some impressive runs with the ball on the left wing.
The Italian sensation is primarily a left-back but can also fill in as a left-sided wide player if asked to do so. However, there are some question marks over whether he can cope with the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football.
We can expect Pellegrini to inject more quality and depth into West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui’s defensive department. At 25, he will only get better as he matures as a footballer over the next few years.
The Italian would even help the London club challenge across all fronts in the future. All in all, Pellegrini would be a great choice for the Hammers to pursue in this summer transfer window.
