In a recent report, The Chronicle stated that West Ham United are keeping a keen eye on Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson. It has been mentioned that the Hammers are eyeing a move to lure the English talent to the London Stadium this summer.
Wilson’s Up-And-Down Season At St. James’ Park
Wilson had a campaign of mixed emotions as he missed a lot of key games for Newcastle due to injuries but managed to put in a run of productive displays in front of the opponent’s goal. The 32-year-old banged in ten goals and grabbed one assist in 26 appearances for the Magpies last season across all competitions.
The veteran forward led the line well for the Tyneside club based on his average of 1.8 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, he needs to find a way to improve his link-up play in the final third after completing 65.2% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Tyneside club will run out at the end of next season which could open the door for the Hammers to snap him up on a cut-price deal later this summer.
Is Wilson A Decent Fit For West Ham United Boss Julen Lopetegui?
Wilson can create a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to play a few decisive passes in the final third and is a good dribbler with the ball as well. The English striker can be a consistent goal-getter up top when he is playing well on the field.
However, Wilson has to find a way to improve his passing accuracy in the opponent’s half. Still, we can expect him to add more firepower to West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui’s attack. Wilson has what it takes to nail down a regular first-team spot at the London Stadium next season.
At 32, the English forward has still got a few good years left in him to play at his best. Hence, it makes sense for the East London club to try and arrange a cut-price move for him this summer as he would be a good fit for Lopetegui’s needs in the short term.
