In a recent report, BBC Sport claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are keeping a keen eye on Lille forward Jonathan David this summer. It has been mentioned that Spurs are facing competition from Chelsea, Manchester United and West Ham United in pursuit of the Canadian talent this off-season.
David’s Impressive Form In French Football
David enjoyed a fine campaign at the French club after putting in a string of productive displays for them on the offensive end of the field. The Canadian talent played in 47 matches for Lille last season, netting 26 goals and picking up nine assists in all competitions.
The 24-year-old gave a good account of himself in the final third as he averaged 2.3 shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half based on his pass completion rate of 82.7% in the French top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Lille will run out at the end of next season which could open the door for Spurs to get a deal done for him on the cheap later this year.
Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu Go For David?
David excels at finding some space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to play some decisive passes in the final third and is quite clever with his movements in and around the opposition penalty area.
The Canadian talent has proven himself to be a prolific presence in front of the opponent’s goal. However, he might need some time to adjust to life in Premier League football.
We can expect David to bring more firepower to Tottenham boss Angelos Postecoglu’s attack. He has what it takes to nail down a regular first-team spot at the North London club next season.
At 24, the Canadian has got his best years ahead of him which makes him a decent option for Spurs to consider in this summer transfer window. Thus, Postecoglu should focus on going for David ahead of the new campaign.
