In a recent report, El Chiringuito mentioned that Newcastle United are among the clubs hoping to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo. It has been stated that the Magpies are facing competition in the form of Manchester United and Manchester City in the race to land the Uruguayan talent this summer.
Araujo’s Impressive Form At The Nou Camp
Araujo put in a series of impressive displays at the heart of the Barcelona backline in the previous campaign. The 25-year-old featured in 37 matches for the Catalan outfit last season, netting one goal and picking up three assists in all competitions.
The Rivera-born talent has been a dominant presence inside his half based on his average of 1.1 tackles, 0.5 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been tidy with his ball distribution after completing 89.6% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Catalan club will run out in the summer of 2026. Hence, it won’t be easy for Newcastle to get a deal done for him on the cheap later this year.
Is Araujo A Good Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Araujo is a tough-tackling defender who can read the danger well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the front foot. Standing at 1.92m, the Uruguay international can use his strong frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. He is even proficient at playing his way out from the back.
We can expect Araujo to add more bite and steel to Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe’s backline. He is good enough to challenge for a regular starting spot at St. James’ Park next season.
At 25, Araujo has his best years ahead of him which makes him a decent choice for the Magpies to consider in this summer transfer window. He might even help the Tyneside club to challenge across all fronts in the coming years. However, there are some concerns over whether Araujo can adapt to the high intensity of Premier League football if Newcastle can manage to bring him on board this off-season.
