In a recent report, Record (via Sport Witness) claimed that Manchester United are monitoring Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand. However, it is understood that the Red Devils are facing competition from Tottenham Hotspur in the race to recruit the Danish midfield ace this summer.
Hjulmund’s Impressive Form In Portuguese Football
Hjulmand had a solid campaign at the Portuguese club as he put in a series of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The Danish sensation registered four goals and four assists in 49 matches for Sporting CP last season across various competitions.
The 24-year-old anchored the midfield well and did well to average 2.0 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 0.8 clearances per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball after completing 86.9% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Portuguese club will expire in the summer of 2028. Thus, Man United would have to launch a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting the Denmark international this off-season.
Should Manchester United Move In For Hjulmand?
Hjulmand is a tough-tackling midfielder who can read the danger well and can make some important interceptions for his team at the centre of the park. He usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and can chip in by scoring and creating a handful of crucial goals for his side from midfield.
Standing at 1.85m, Hjulmund is a strong presence on the ball as well. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also function as a box-to-box midfielder or play in the number ten position if required.
We can expect Hjulmund to add more bite and steel to Man United‘s midfield department. He is good enough to fight for a regular starting place at Old Trafford next season. However, the jury is still out on whether the Danish sensation can adapt to the high intensity of Premier League football.
At 24, Hjulmund has got his peak years ahead of him which makes him a worthy target for the Red Devils to pursue this summer. Thus, Man United should think about moving in for him before the end of this summer transfer period.
