According to Spanish publication Sport, Manchester City are interested in signing Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin in the summer window. The English club want to sign a new stopper amid the uncertainty over the future of Ederson.
Andriy Lunin’s story has taken a turn
Andriy Lunin signed for Real Madrid from Zorya Luhansk in the summer of 2018. However, he was sent on a couple of loan spells before he became a backup goalie. Even this season, he wasn’t the primary choice until Thibaut Courtois suffered an injury.
One man’s loss is another man’s gain. Lunin grabbed the opportunity with both hands and proved his worth on the biggest stages. He featured in 31 games and managed to keep 12 clean sheets while conceding 32 goals in the process.
The Ukranian stopper showed that he is capable of playing for a top-tier club like Real Madrid. He reads the threats well and anticipates the attacker’s movement. He is excellent at blocking the ball, and distribution, and remains calm under pressure.
Not an easy signing for sure
Manchester City have been linked to numerous goalkeepers over the past few months. Their sudden interest arose after reports emerged of Saudi’s interest in Ederson. The Brazilian is an integral part of the side and his departure will affect the squad’s quality.
The Citizens have Stefan Ortega in their bag who performed well whenever given an opportunity. However, possession of only one world-class goalkeeper would be too risky given the length of the season and the numbers of the games.
Hence, the Premier League champions have identified Andriy Lunin as a viable target to fill Ederson’s shoes. The -year-old proved his stakes on the big nights and could be a long-term investment. But they will have to convince the player about his role in their exciting sporting project.
Moreover, the English outfit will also have to crack a deal with Real Madrid, who are in no hurry to sell the talented goalkeeper in the summer.
