Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has disclosed the true reason why he refuses to speak English. The Argentina skipper is one of the most well-known sports personalities in the world who doesn’t speak English publically.
However, since sealing a move to Inter Miami, Messi has made a lot of public appearances. In a recent video advertisement for the latest Bad Boys movie starring Will Smith, the Argentine footballer said a couple of words in English to promote the film.
The 36-year-old enjoyed a decent campaign at Inter Miami as he managed to put in a lot of productive displays for them on the offensive end of the field. Messi has found the back of the net 14 times and earned 11 assists in 15 appearances for his current club so far this season.
The Argentine is a serial winner and seems to be enjoying his time in the United States of America right now.
In a recent interview, Messi revealed the real reason why he doesn’t speak English that often.
Speaking to Abitare, Lionel Messi said,
“I understand everything, or almost everything in English. But out of embarrassment I don’t speak – but I think I can actually.”
Messi’s Inter Miami teammate Julian Gressel has previously disclosed that the Argentine superstar is good enough at English to crack jokes with his colleagues on the field. Gressel said,
“Messi doesn’t really ever speak to me much and if he did, then it was a little bit in Spanish always.
“I understand most of it in Spanish. He came over to me and said something in English.
“That was the first time he’d spoken to me in English, during the game. He was covering his mouth like he always does. Then after – this is the funny part about it – he goes, ‘English pretty good, no?’”
At the moment, Messi is training with the Argentine national team as they look to defend their Copa America crown when the tournament gets underway soon.
