Gary Lineker is ready to apologise following his on-air comment to Chelsea legend Frank Lampard that went viral recently. The English sports broadcaster poked fun at his colleague during the coverage of Euro 2024.
Lineker was joined by Lampard, Alex Scott and Brentford head coach Thomas Frank for the Euro 2024 contest between Germany and Hungary earlier this month. During the broadcast, the 63-year-old poked fun at Lampard.
Gary Lineker revealed that there was a screen in the background of the studio, which was blocking supporters from being able to look in.
Lampard cracked a joke by stating that if the screen was taken away, then they would only be able to see the back of his head.
Lineker had a surprise response for the 46-year-old as he said, ‘nobody wants to see the back of your head’.
Lampard initially tried to laugh off Lineker’s taunt before his smile faded and his face turned serious.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker stated he feels ‘bad’ for Lampard and intends to apologise to the Chelsea legend for his inadvertent comment during the Euro 2024 broadcast.

Lineker said,
“I got myself in a bit of a pickle with Frank Lampard. It’s gone viral, I feel bad.
“I didn’t mean it the way it came out, but it’s quite funny and Frank’s as good as gold, he doesn’t mind. Obviously Frank’s slightly thinning, I’m slightly thinning, and I actually meant it about everyone.
“But when it came out, it came out a bit wrong. And you know Frank does that thing where he smiles, and then he suddenly doesn’t smile?”
The Match of the Day present went on to add,
“Frank’s great fun, he won’t mind. I must admit, when I got back to the hotel and saw it on social media, I went, ‘Oh you f**king idiot’,’
“I felt really bad, I’ll have to apologise. It wasn’t deliberate but I get how funny it was. Those things happen on live TV.”
