In a recent report, Sport revealed that Barcelona have set their sights on Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams this summer. It has been mentioned that the Catalan club are showing interest in recruiting the Spanish talent this off-season.
Williams’ Impressive Run Of Form In Spanish Football
Williams enjoyed a productive campaign at the Spanish club after he put in a string of impressive displays for them on the offensive end of the field. The 21-year-old scored eight times and picked up 19 assists in 37 matches for Atletico Madrid last season in various competitions.
The Spanish wide player has been a reliable performer in the opponent’s half as he averaged 1.8 shots, 1.5 key passes and 2.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been accurate when interchanging possession with his teammates based on his pass completion rate of 79.2% in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Spanish club will run out in the summer of 2027 which could make it difficult for Barcelona to sign him on the cheap later this year.
Should Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick Go For Williams?
Williams can use his pace well to get in behind the opponent’s backline and is a great dribbler with the ball at his feet. He has got the vision to orchestrate a few promising chances for his teammates in the final third and can strike the ball with power from long range.
The Spanish sensation is primarily a left-sided wide player but can also play as a right-winger if needed. We can expect him to bring more pace and goals to Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick’s attack.
At 21, Williams has the potential to be a world-class wide player someday. Therefore, it makes sense for Barca to try and arrange a move for him in the summer transfer window.
Williams might even help the Catalan club challenge for some major honours over the next decade. Thus, Flick should focus on going for the Spanish wing wizard before the start of the new campaign as he would be an excellent signing for Barca in the long run. He already knows La Liga well and won’t take much time to settle into life at the Nou Camp.
