In a recent report, The Telegraph mentioned that Aston Villa are locked in a three-way battle for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher. It has been stated that the Villans would have to rival Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid in the race to land the English playmaker this summer.
Gallagher’s Impressive Form In The Premier League Last Season
Gallagher had a solid campaign at Stamford Bridge recently as he managed to produce a series of influential displays for the Blues in the middle of the park. The 24-year-old scored seven goals and grabbed nine assists in 50 matches for Chelsea last season on all fronts.
The English talent gave a good account of himself at both ends of the field and did well to average 2.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 1.3 shots, 1.4 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He has even taken care of the ball when distributing possession from midfield after making 91.5% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the West London club will expire at the end of next season which could make it difficult for the Villans to snap him up on the cheap later this summer.
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Go For Gallagher?
Gallagher can do a little bit of everything at the centre of the park. He loves a tackle and can make the odd interception for his team when he is playing well on the pitch. He usually clears the danger when needed and can strike the ball with venom and precision from long range.
The English midfield ace can even make a few clever runs with the ball from midfield and is a decent playmaker in the opponent’s half. He is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also play as a defensive midfielder or operate in the number ten position if needed.
Gallagher would undeniably enhance the quality of Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s first XI. He is more than capable of earning a regular starting role at Villa Park next season and could help the Villans compete across all competitions in the future. Therefore, the West Midlands outfit would be wise to go for a player of Gallagher’s quality this summer.
