In a recent report, AS claimed that Aston Villa are facing tough competition for Real Sociedad talent Brais Mendez this summer. It is understood that the Villans would have to rival Juventus, AS Roma and Napoli in the race to land the Spanish playmaker this off-season.
Mendez’s Decent Run Of Form In La Liga
Mendez had an impressive campaign at the Spanish club after he put in a string of eye-catching displays as a key member of their attack. The South American sensation featured in 44 matches for Real Sociedad last season, finding the back of the net eight times and earning nine assists across all fronts.
The 27-year-old was a consistent performer in the final third based on his average of 2.1 shots, 1.3 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per game in La Liga. He has even been accurate when distributing possession in the opponent’s half as he made 81% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Spanish club will expire in the summer of 2028. Thus, it won’t be easy for Aston Villa to arrange a cut-price move for him in this transfer window.
Aston Villa Are Facing Tough Competition For Mendez: Is He Worth The Fight?
Mendez is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make some driving runs with it in the opponent’s half. He has got the vision to orchestrate a few inviting chances for his teammates in the final third and can shoot the ball with power from long range.
The Spaniard is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also play as a box-to-box midfielder or as a right-sided wide player if told to do so. However, he might need some time to adjust to life in Premier League football if the Villans manage to get him on board this summer.
Mendez would add more firepower to Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery’s attack. He is good enough to nail down a regular starting spot at Villa Park next season. Hence, Mendez would be well worth the fight, so the West Midlands club would be wise to step up their pursuit of the Spanish talent this off-season.
