In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that West Ham United are set to rival Chelsea for Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer. It has been stated that the Hammers are in a good position to recruit the English forward in the upcoming transfer window.
Toney’s Impressive Numbers In Premier League Football
Toney has caught the eye at times for Brentford this season as he has put in a series of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 28-year-old has banged in four goals and grabbed one assist in 14 appearances for the Bees during this campaign across all competitions.
The Northampton-born talent has led the line well for his team and had done well to average 3.0 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, he has been sloppy when linking up play with his teammates in the final third after making just 54.9% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at Brentford will run out in the summer of 2025 which could open the door for the Hammers to seal a cut-price move for him later this year.
Should West Ham United Move In For Toney?
Toney can orchestrate a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He has got the eye to play a few decisive passes in the final third and can make some dangerous runs with the ball deep inside the opposition’s half.
Standing at 1.85m, the English centre-forward can be a strong presence on the ball but needs to work on improving his link-up play up top. Still, there is no denying that he would bring more firepower to West Ham’s attack.
Toney is good enough to rival Michail Antonio for a regular starting spot at the East London club in the coming years. He might even help the Hammers challenge across all fronts in the future.
At 28, Toney is playing in his prime and has what it takes to make an immediate impact at the London Stadium. Thus, West Ham would be wise to move in for the Brentford star when the transfer window commences at the end of this season.
