In a recent interview with Tottenham News, podcaster and transfer insider John Wenham urged Tottenham Hotspur to move in for Red Bull Leipzig striker Lois Openda this summer. Wenham said,
“I watched Openda in the Champions League a couple of times this year and I was impressed.
“He has a real mix of pace and excellent finishing ability.
“He looks like someone who could also play out wide, so he would be an interesting replacement for Richarlison. Openda would be my first choice.”
Openda’s Impressive Form In German Football
Openda has enjoyed a productive campaign in Germany after putting in a lot of impressive displays as the focal point of Leipzig’s attack. The 24-year-old has banged in 28 goals and picked seven assists in 45 matches for his current employers this season across all competitions.
The Belgian talent has led the line well for the German club as he is averaging 3.6 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Bundesliga football. However, he lacks quality when interchanging possession with his teammates deep inside the opponent’s half based on his pass success rate of 69.2% in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu Snap Openda Up This Summer?
Openda can create a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He has proven himself to be a capable finisher in the Bundesliga. However, it remains to be seen whether the talented forward can maintain his good form in Premier League football.
The Belgian talent can create the odd chance for his teammates in the final third and can make some clever runs in and around the opposition penalty box. He is primarily a centre-forward but can also function as a winger on either flank if needed.
Openda would bring more firepower to Tottenham boss Angelos Postecoglu’s frontline. He has what it takes to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the North London club in the coming seasons. However, the gifted striker has to find a way to improve his link-up play up top if he wants to be a success story in English football.
At 24, the best is yet to come from the Belgian forward. Still, there is no denying that Spurs should try and snap Openda up in the summer transfer period as he is good enough to help them compete across all fronts in the future.
