Tottenham Hotspur have been a long admirer of former Everton star Thierry Small. They even tried to sign him last year but couldn’t meet the demands and missed out on him. However, the former Premier League side have set their eyes on the youngster again, according to Football Insider.
Thierry Small’s rise and fall
Thierry Small was one of the highly-rated kids coming out from Everton’s academy. The likes of Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Manchester United were all interested after the relationship fell between the player and his former club. However, Southampton had the last laugh as they lured away the talented kid.
But little did one know that the switch would turn Small’s career drastically. After failing to impress, both parties decided to terminate the contract mutually. The player currently plays for Charlton Athletic in the League One club.
Small has appeared in 20 games this season, netting once and providing one assist. He is averaging 0.9 tackles, 0.2 interceptions, and 1.5 clearances per game (stats via whoscored).
Will Tottenham Hotspur change Thierry Small’s fate?
It’s evident Thierry Small has been struggling to identify himself in the competitive world. Once considered a star in the making, he is now battling for his place in the lower-tier leagues. He was too good to play at the youth level but was not prepared to keep up the pace of the senior team.
Interestingly, despite all these facts, Tottenham Hotspur remains keen on adding the 19-year-old to their ranks. They believe that the youngster still has a lot of time to evolve and turn into an elite player. However, it will be a risky bet to place.
Small definitely has many areas to improve if he wishes to solidify his case. Joining Spurs would be a move in the right direction. It will be interesting to see how this chapter unfolds in the upcoming months.
