In a recent edition of the Overlap, Wayne Rooney opened up about being sued by David Moyes following his switch to Manchester United in 2004. Rooney revealed that he was sued by his former Everton boss over comments he made in his book.
In 2007, Moyes opted to take legal action against the English centre-forward after Rooney accused the Scottish manager of leaking details of a private discussion between the pair in his 2006 autobiography, ‘My Story So Far’.
When pressed about the incident back then, Moyes’ lawyer said,
“Mr Moyes was not the source, direct or indirect, of anything in the article. There was no breach of confidence or betrayal of trust by Mr Moyes.”
Following the incident, Rooney went on to have a long and decorated career at Manchester United. The English talent ended his career at Old Trafford, scoring 253 goals and grabbing 139 assists in 559 matches for the Red Devils across all fronts.
Rooney has recently opened up about the incident involving Moyes in a chat with Gary Neville. The 38-year-old said,
“David Moyes was really good for me at Everton.
“He sued me after I left the club – I hammered him when I left because of how I felt at the time.
“Yeah [I regret that]. I spoke to him a few years after I left, I called him up and apologised because the older you get, you realise why he was doing things.
“It was new to him, to have a player getting all those headlines, for him to figure out. He was a young manager at the time, it was new to him.
“When I look back, he was good for me, he was constantly on me. He was trying not let me think that I was better than I was.”
Both Rooney and Moyes ended up settling their differences over time, with the Scottish head coach managing the star forward when he took over as the Manchester United boss back in 2013.
